| The world was advanced. It was not the shinning future told about in books and movies - no, it wasn't that far yet. Things were similar to the earlier in the century. However, with the waning oil supplies drawing ever emptier, scientist found a new solution. Hydrogen and Batteries, and not your standard alkaline batteries either. These were powered by a glowing blue liquid called FLR - a rechargeable energy carrier that revolutionized the world. The new power source was used not only in power plants and cars. Thanks to its liquid form, turned out to be irreplaceable in electronics. Soon, a field of science that at the beginning of the century was just being born, reached its renaissance. Neuro-electronics changed human lives for ever. Humans started to modify themselves, adding in robotic implants; arms, legs, spines, jaws - anything that could be replaced was. Some people simply replaced limbs they lost in accidents and to disease, but some went further than that and willingly discarded parts of their bodies to replace them with artificial ones. There were limitations though - no one could live on mechanical parts only. Most of the robotic prosthetics, thanks to the properties of FLR didn't need any additional batteries, as they drew most of the energy directly from the body. Too many artificial parts, without any external source of energy, meant death of anything organic that was left. But once the plague hit, the world went to ruins. Though no one knows where the plague came from, many had theories ranging from government conspiracies to punishment from god. One thing everyone knew was that everyone was changing, and not for the better. The vast majority of the population has mutated into mindless, driven by an insatiable hunger zombies. The infection spread via body fluids. Most of those who have been bitten mutated almost instantly. The pattern was always the same - the bitten victims bodies began to shiver and spasm in pain. They always looked and begged for help. But those who agreed to look over them always regretted it later on. Within the next 24 hours the victims turned into grisly looking creatures. Their skin tore apart leaving parts of the abnormally swelling muscle structure exposed. Their bodies changed into nothing but a mass of cancerous flesh and melting skin... which craved for blood. The military tried to prevent the rapid spreading of the disease, first by bombing the main centres of infection, then by using biological weapons. But their efforts only made everything worse. The counter-viruses they used not only made the zombies mutate even further, creating a whole myriad of horrors - Stalkers, Tyrants, Crawlers, Spiders; but also infected a lot of those who actually managed to survive. The new viruses also caused mutations, but of a completely different nature. A handful of humans started to grow fur, scales or feathers. Their limbs grew claws and talons. Their bodies slowly and painfully started to turn into bizarre animal-like creatures. Some survivors have mutated only partially, keeping a bigger portion of their humanity, but at the cost of their physical appearance. |
